Excessive urination may be caused by increased water intake, diabetes, diabetes insipidus, urinary tract infection, prostatic hyperplasia, etc.
1. Increase water intake:
Drinking large amounts of water or consuming drinks containing diuretic ingredients such as coffee and tea in a short period of time can lead to increased urine output. This is a normal physiological phenomenon, and the frequency and volume of urination will naturally adjust with body fluid intake. Rehydration after exercise or increased drinking in high temperature environments also fall into this category and do not require special treatment.
2. Diabetes:
When blood sugar is too high, the kidneys take away a lot of water by excreting excess sugar, which manifests as polyuria and thirst. It may be related to insufficient insulin secretion or insulin resistance, and is usually accompanied by symptoms such as weight loss and fatigue. Diagnosis needs to be confirmed by blood glucose testing, and treatment includes oral hypoglycemic drugs such as metformin, glimepiride, or insulin injections.
3. Diabetes insipidus:
When antidiuretic hormone is not secreted enough or the kidneys are insensitive to it, urine cannot be concentrated. Central diabetes insipidus may be related to brain trauma and tumors, while nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is often related to genetics or chronic kidney disease. The patient's daily urine output can reach 5-10 liters, and a water-deprived pressurization test is required to confirm the diagnosis. Desmopressin and other drugs can be used for treatment.
4. Urinary system infection:
Cystitis or urethritis can cause frequent urination and urgency, but less urine output each time. True polyuria may occur if accompanied by pyelonephritis, which is related to the decrease in renal tubular reabsorption function caused by inflammation. Common pathogens include Escherichia coli and Proteus, which require routine urine examination for diagnosis, and antibiotics such as levofloxacin and cefixime are required for treatment.
5. Prostatic hyperplasia:
In middle-aged and elderly men, the compression of the urethra by the prostate leads to an increase in residual urine in the bladder, which can easily lead to compensatory polyuria. It may be related to changes in androgen levels, which is often accompanied by difficulty urinating and thinning of the urine line. It can be diagnosed through digital rectal examination and ultrasound. In mild cases, drugs such as tamsulosin can be used. In severe cases, surgical removal of hyperplastic tissue is required.
It is recommended to record daily urination and water consumption, and avoid ingesting diuretic substances such as alcohol and caffeine. Long-term polyuria requires checking blood sugar, urine specific gravity and kidney function. Middle-aged and elderly men should undergo regular prostate screening. Keeping the perineum clean can prevent urinary infections, and diabetics need to strictly control their diet. If polyuria is accompanied by obvious thirst, sudden weight loss, or fever, you should seek medical attention promptly to check for endocrine or infectious diseases.
