Itching of the glans penis may be related to factors such as foreskin, contact dermatitis, bacterial infection, fungal infection, pubic lice, etc. Balanitis usually manifests as local itching, redness, swelling, abnormal secretions and other symptoms. It is recommended to seek medical treatment promptly to identify the cause and carry out targeted treatment.
1. Foreskin is too long
Excessive foreskin can easily lead to the accumulation of smegma, which can irritate the glans mucosa and cause itching. Incomplete cleaning for a long time may induce balanitis, accompanied by flushing or white discharge from the glans. The foreskin needs to be opened and cleaned daily. In severe cases, erythromycin ointment or compound ketoconazole cream and other drugs must be used as directed by the doctor. Circumcision may be considered if necessary.
2. Contact dermatitis
Contact with detergents, condoms or underwear materials may trigger an allergic reaction, causing itching and rash at the area where the glans comes into contact. Those with mild symptoms can rinse with warm water and change pure cotton underwear. In severe cases, oral loratadine tablets or topical hydrocortisone butyrate cream should be taken as directed by the doctor, and allergens should be checked and avoided.
3. Bacterial infection
Infection with pathogens such as gonorrhea or Escherichia coli can cause acute balanitis, which manifests as glans erosion with purulent discharge and severe itching. The diagnosis requires secretion testing. You can use cefixime dispersible tablets or levofloxacin tablets as directed by your doctor, diluted with potassium permanganate solution and then rinse locally.
4. Fungal infection
Candida albicans infection is common in patients with diabetes or people with low immunity. White film and annular erythema appear on the glans penis, and itching is obvious at night. The diagnosis requires microscopic examination to detect hyphae, and treatment requires the use of miconazole nitrate suppositories or itraconazole capsules as directed by the doctor, while controlling blood sugar levels.
5. Pubic lice
Pubic lice bites can cause severe itching of the glans and pubic hair area, and gray-white eggs or moving lice bodies can be seen. Pubic hair needs to be shaved and washed with sulfur soap. Close-fitting clothing needs to be boiled and disinfected. In severe cases, benzyl benzoate liniment or permethrin cream should be used externally as directed by your doctor.
The perineum should be kept clean and dry every day to avoid scratching which may aggravate the infection. Sexual intercourse is prohibited during treatment, and partners need to be checked simultaneously. Choose loose and breathable cotton underwear and change it daily. The diet should be light and less irritating. If the itching persists or symptoms such as ulcers and exudation occur, you should immediately go to a dermatology or urology department to avoid delaying the condition with self-medication.
