Post-circumcision edema can be relieved by applying ice, elevating the penis, keeping it clean, avoiding strenuous exercise, and taking medication as directed by your doctor. Postoperative edema is usually caused by surgical trauma, obstruction of lymphatic flow, local infection, premature erection, allergic reaction and other reasons.

    1. Ice compress

Within 24-48 hours after the operation, an ice pack can be wrapped in a clean towel and a cold compress can be applied to the root of the penis for 10-15 minutes each time, repeated at 1-hour intervals. Low temperature can constrict blood vessels and reduce leakage, but direct contact with the wound must be avoided. Ice application should be stopped after more than 48 hours, otherwise blood circulation may be affected.

    2. Raise the penis

When lying on your back, use a soft towel to hold your penis upward and secure it, and when standing, wear tight underwear to provide support. Gravity helps lymphatic fluid flow back and reduces swelling. It is necessary to pay attention to the moderate fixation strength to avoid compressing the urethral opening and affecting urination.

    3. Keep it clean

Gently rinse the wound with normal saline or a disinfectant recommended by your doctor every day, and wipe away any remaining urine after urination. Keeping it dry can reduce the risk of bacterial infection, but do not remove the dressing yourself. If the dressing exudes too much or emits a peculiar odor, you need to return to the hospital in time.

    4. Avoid strenuous exercise

Within 2 weeks after surgery, strenuous activities of the lower limbs such as running and cycling are prohibited to reduce friction and congestion of the penis. You can sleep on your side at night to prevent pressure from bedding. When you have a sudden erection, you can take deep breaths to distract your attention, and if necessary, take estrogen drugs as directed by your doctor.

    5. Take medication as directed by your doctor

If there is obvious redness, swelling, heat and pain, the doctor may prescribe diosmin tablets to improve lymphatic circulation, cefaclor capsules to prevent infection, and aescin sodium tablets to reduce tissue edema. Do not apply ointment to wounds by yourself. People with allergies must inform their doctor in advance of their medication history.

After surgery, you should wear loose cotton underwear to avoid friction, choose water-digesting foods such as winter melon and barley, and limit spicy and irritating foods. The edema usually subsides gradually in 1-2 weeks. If it continues to worsen with fever and purulent secretions, you need to seek medical attention immediately. During the recovery period, sexual intercourse and masturbation are prohibited, and the patient returns to the hospital regularly to review the wound healing.
