Highlighting the charm of traditional Chinese medicine while advancing with the times

In December 1955, with the ardent care and support of the Party Central Committee and Chairman Mao and other older generations, the first national comprehensive TCM research institution in New China, the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (later renamed the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences), was established. More than 40 TCM masters were elected to Beijing and became the core force for the development of TCM in our country.

Under the extremely difficult scientific research conditions and environment in the 1960s and 1970s, the older generation of experts from the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine took advantage of the original scientific and technological advantages of traditional Chinese medicine and carried out research on small splints to treat fractures, acupuncture, and needle removal of cataracts. Especially in the national "523" antimalarial drug research project, an expert team headed by researcher Tu Youyou from the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine achieved breakthrough results in artemisinin research and opened a new chapter in the scientific research of traditional Chinese medicine.

From the early days of the establishment of the institute, it organized the compilation of clinical research specifications for various subjects of TCM, to the drawing of the patterns of the fourteen meridians and acupuncture points, from the investigation of TCM resources, the collection of folk TCM herbal medicines and the compilation of processing experience, to the reform of TCM dosage forms, the research on the creation of new TCM drugs, the organization of the compilation of the "National Collection of Chinese Herbal Medicines", and the editing and publication of various medical history documents, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has laid an important foundation for the development of traditional Chinese medicine in New China. Since the reform and opening up, from organizing the compilation of the "Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine", to editing and sorting out the "Standard Specification of Traditional Chinese Medicine Symptoms" and "Standard Specification of Traditional Chinese Medicine Terminology", to organizing and carrying out the national census of traditional Chinese medicine resources and the secondary development of large varieties of traditional Chinese medicine, important scientific and technological support has been provided for the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry and the protection and utilization of traditional Chinese medicine resources.

As Academician Zhang Boli, President of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, said, "The revitalization and development of traditional Chinese medicine has ushered in a great opportunity due to the right time, location, and people." In recent years, the Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has kept pace with the times and adhered to the "six-in-one" comprehensive development of medical care, health care, scientific research, education, industry, and culture. It has achieved fruitful results in the fields of basic theoretical research on traditional Chinese medicine, prevention and treatment of major diseases, acupuncture meridian research, protection of traditional Chinese medicine resources, research on traditional Chinese medicine development, standardization of traditional Chinese medicine, and medical literature. It has received a total of 255 science and technology awards at all levels, including 22 national science and technology awards and 49 science and technology awards established by the government and ministries. Lifelong researcher Tu Youyou also won the 2011 Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award in the United States for the discovery of artemisinin, and won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, becoming the first local scientist in my country to win the Nobel Prize in recent years.

In order to exert its influence in the international traditional medicine community, the Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has undertaken 57 international cooperation projects and signed 67 international cooperation agreements with more than 60 countries and localities.

The development of traditional Chinese medicine is given the wings of modern science and technology

“The unique theoretical system and original thinking of traditional Chinese medicine contain huge potential for innovation. If well combined with modern scientific and technological means, it will produce many innovative results. The research on artemisinin follows this path. ”Chen Shilin, director of the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, believes that TCM workers should find the source of innovation from this great treasure house, draw innovative inspiration from the vast ancient medical books, draw innovative methods from modern science and technology, aim at the forefront of science and technology, and strive to overcome problems, so that they can make greater contributions to promoting my country's social and economic development and accelerating the construction of an innovative country.

Academician Cao Xuetao, president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, believes that with the transformation of medical models and the rise of systemic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine will once again attract the attention of the world. It is the task entrusted to us by the times to use modern science and technology to explore the connotation of traditional medicine and organically integrate it with modern medicine to solve major problems in disease prevention and health security in my country. Like artemisinin, it can gain international recognition, go global, lead the world, and benefit mankind.

As Nobel laureate researcher Tu Youyou pointed out: Scientific research is endless. Even in the research on artemisinin, there is still a lot of work to be further deepened. She sincerely hopes that winning the Nobel Prize will form a new incentive mechanism for young comrades. Encourage young comrades to study hard, contribute hard, work together in unity, and reach new heights bravely, so as to inherit and innovate traditional Chinese medicine and develop human health, so as to achieve a double harvest of talents and achievements.

Wang Guoqiang, director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said: "How to transform traditional Chinese medicine, my country's most original and advantageous scientific and technological resource, into knowledge resources, knowledge advantages, technological advantages and industrial advantages is a major issue before us. ”He hopes that the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences will highlight the charm of traditional Chinese medicine while advancing with the times, strengthen scientific and technological support, and add the wings of modern technology to the development of traditional Chinese medicine.
