A healthy unilateral breast may also have discharge. Not all unilateral discharge is linked to breast disease. There is no need to be scared to death as soon as you discover it.

Last week, I met a 26-year-old female programmer in the clinic. She stayed up all night for a week working on a project. Her stomach was bloated and she had been taking Domperidone for almost half a month. She massaged her breasts to relax while taking a shower, and found a few drops of clear fluid coming out of one nipple. She immediately became red-eyed and thought she had breast cancer. As a result, she had a breast ultrasound and a prolactin test, which were all normal. She was told to stop taking the stomach medicine and adjust her daily schedule. When she came back for a follow-up examination two weeks later, there was no more discharge.

Nowadays, the opinions about overflow on the Internet are in two extremes. Either they say "any discharge is a precancerous lesion", which makes everyone feel insecure and make blind assumptions about the slightest movement, or they say "overflow is all normal and don't need to be taken care of", which in turn delays treatment for people who really have abnormalities. Both of these statements are undesirable. In fact, the breast ducts themselves secrete a small amount of serous fluid to maintain the internal environment, just like the mouth secretes saliva to lubricate it. This is not a strange sign of disease. For example, if the shaping bra you recently wore is too tight and squeezes the breast for a long time, during ovulation or premenstrual period, hormone levels fluctuate, you take drugs that affect prolactin (in addition to domperidone, some antidepressants and antihistamine drugs are common), and you have just finished breastfeeding for 1-2 years, you may have discharge from the healthy side. This kind is mostly clear, transparent or milky white, and generally only comes out when squeezing. It will not stain the underwear for no reason, and will not be accompanied by pain, lumps and other discomforts.

But it’s not a dead end. If you encounter discharge that comes out on your own initiative, it will stick to your underwear without squeezing, and the color will be darker or even bloody. When you touch the breast, you can feel an unknown hard lump, or the nipple is suddenly sunken, and the surrounding skin is wrinkled like orange peel. Then don’t hold on at home and go to the breast department as soon as possible. This kind of discharge is most likely related to pathological changes, such as intraductal papilloma, mastitis or even breast cancer. Early detection and early intervention are always the best.

I usually remind the girls who come for screening that they don’t deliberately squeeze their nipples to look for leakage when taking a bath, as it can easily injure the ducts. If they find it accidentally, first recall whether there have been any of the physiological and external factors mentioned above recently. If you are not sure, just call a regular account and do a basic breast ultrasound, which only costs more than 100 yuan. It is much more reliable than guessing at Baidu entries at home and scaring yourself.
