Broadly speaking, all regular active exercises with the goal of improving physical fitness and physical condition belong to the category of fitness exercises. The ones we are most exposed to on a daily basis are strength training, aerobic training, and training that is more functional and restorative.
Strength training is not just limited to lifting irons in the gym. Doing bodyweight squats and push-ups at home, even doing lunges while holding the cat that weighs more than 10 pounds at home, as long as it is resistance training that targets muscle size and strength. My former roommate, a programmer, stuffed two 10kg dumbbells under his workstation, and he did about ten sets of dumbbells to catch fish. After practicing for more than half a year, the round-headed hunchback caused by sitting for a long time improved a lot, and he didn't even need to call the management to help him change the bottled water.
If strength training is to "build a frame" for muscles and bones, then the aerobic training that many people usually do is to "maintain" cardiopulmonary function. You don’t have to force yourself to run five kilometers to get aerobic. You can take a detour from get off work and ride a bicycle for 20 minutes. You can take your children to climb a hill in a country park on weekends. You can even do aerobics for 15 minutes at home. As long as your heart rate is maintained at about 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate, it is a very effective aerobic training. My best friend had an old knee injury and was afraid to run or jump, so she chose swimming as her daily aerobic exercise. She lost 3.8% of her body fat in three months, and even the bronchitis she suffered from during the change of seasons became less common.
Nowadays, everyone's understanding of fitness has long been out of the misunderstanding that "you must train until you are tired and build muscles to count." Many trainings that are biased towards functional recovery have gradually become popular options for fitness, such as Pilates for core stability, yoga to improve flexibility, and posture adjustments and muscle activation movements taught by rehabilitation doctors to people with lumbar protrusions and shoulder and neck strains. In essence, they are all a type of fitness. Last week, I accompanied a colleague with lumbar protrusion for rehabilitation. The doctor also joked that the Feiyan movements he taught while lying on the bed, if practiced every day, would be much more useful than having a fitness card worth tens of thousands to practice blindly.
There are occasional controversies in the fitness circle nowadays. Some people think that you have to go to the gym and use professional equipment to lift weights to be considered "serious fitness". Others think that taking less elevators and climbing stairs more often, and walking for half an hour after meals are the most suitable fitness exercises for ordinary office workers. In fact, there is no need to compete with each other. As long as it matches your physical condition, can persist for a long time, and is comfortable and not uncomfortable after the exercise, it is the fitness exercise that is suitable for you.
