The prostate is an important accessory gland in the male reproductive system. Its main functions include secreting prostatic fluid to form semen, participating in ejaculation control, and maintaining smooth urethra.
1. Secretory function
The prostate can secrete a thin, milky white alkaline liquid that accounts for 30% of the total semen volume. Prostatic fluid contains zinc ions, acid phosphatase, proteolytic enzymes and other substances, which can neutralize the acidic vaginal environment and maintain sperm motility and fertilization ability. Fibrinolytic enzymes required for semen liquefaction are also produced by the prostate and play a key role in allowing sperm to break through the cervical mucus barrier.
2. Control ejaculation
Prostatic smooth muscle and bladder neck muscles together form the anatomical internal sphincter. During ejaculation, the prostate muscles contract regularly to promote the discharge of semen through the urethra and prevent the semen from flowing back into the bladder. This coordinated movement is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, and abnormal function may lead to retrograde ejaculation or premature ejaculation.
3. Protect the urethra
The prostate surrounds the prostate part of the urethra, and its glandular tissue has an elastic buffering effect. Under normal circumstances, it can avoid the pressure and narrowing of the urethra during urination, and the antibacterial peptides secreted by the glands can prevent urinary tract infections. But when the prostate enlarges, it may compress the urethra and make urination difficult.
4. Hormone metabolism
The prostate is an androgen target organ that converts testosterone into the more active dihydrotestosterone. This transformation relies on 5α-reductase in prostate cells and plays an important role in maintaining male secondary sexual characteristics and sexual function. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is closely related to excessive accumulation of dihydrotestosterone.
5. Immune defense
Prostatic fluid contains zinc-protein complexes, lysozyme and other immunoactive substances, which can protect the genitourinary tract by directly sterilizing and regulating local immune responses. However, excessively frequent sexual activity may cause long-term congestion of the prostate, which in turn reduces its defense function.
In daily life, you need to maintain moderate exercise and avoid sitting for long periods of time. It is recommended to perform aerobic exercise such as brisk walking or swimming for more than 30 minutes three times a week. You can add tomatoes, pumpkin seeds and other foods containing zinc and antioxidants to your diet, drink more than 2000 ml of water every day, and ejaculate regularly but avoid excessive frequency. Men over 50 years old should have a prostate-specific antigen test every year. If they experience frequent urination, urgency or perineal discomfort, they need to seek medical attention promptly.
