What is the relationship between poisoning and accidental first aid?

To put it simply, the relationship between the two is "scenario dependence + two-way support". Poisoning itself is one of the most common accidental first aid scenarios. At the same time, the special specifications for poisoning first aid are also completing the boundaries of the entire accidental first aid system.

Last year, when I was on duty at the street emergency volunteer team, I encountered an old couple who ate pickled cabbage that had been left out for almost a week. They vomited, had diarrhea, and turned their lips black. At first, my son thought it was ordinary gastroenteritis. When calling 120, the operator first followed the general principles of emergency first aid and told him not to give antiemetics, move the person to a ventilated area, lie down, and tilt the head to one side to prevent choking. When he went to the hospital, he was diagnosed with nitrite poisoning. He recovered within half an hour after pushing methylene blue. You see in this scene, food poisoning is an unintentional accident, and it naturally falls under the category of accidental first aid. The general treatment in the early stage is not a trap, and the subsequent targeted detoxification can play a role. The two are inherently integrated.

Of course, there are different voices in the industry. When participating in the provincial first aid skills training, several teachers in the occupational defense field mentioned that poisoning first aid is too specific. Biological toxin poisoning, such as chemical burn poisoning and snake bites and wasp stings, requires the use of exclusive antidotes and disposal procedures. The common logic of hemostasis and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in ordinary accidental first aid cannot be covered at all, and should be made into an independent training system. However, most of our front-line first responders still feel that it is more practical to include poisoning in the larger framework of accidental first aid. After all, when ordinary people encounter an emergency, their first reaction is simply not able to tell whether it is a cardiovascular or cerebrovascular accident or poisoning. First, follow the general procedures to check consciousness, check breathing, prevent secondary injuries, and then investigate the triggers, which can seize the golden time for rescue.

We encountered a case two summers ago. Parents mixed toilet cleaning liquid and 84 to clean the toilet. The child came over and took a whiff and choked until he coughed. The parents panicked and held down the child, then gave him water and patted his back. The choking secretions almost blocked the airway. After he recovered at the hospital, we told the parents, If we had followed the general principles of first aid for accidents, carried the child to a ventilated area on the balcony, and refrained from feeding him anything randomly, it would not have caused secondary damage. Many people only want to look for "antidote" when they hear about poisoning, but forget the most basic principles of first aid for accidents, which makes them prone to bad things.

It sounds pretty vivid. Accident first aid is like the basic operating system on your mobile phone. Poison first aid is an APP with exclusive functions installed on the system. Without the support of the basic system, the APP cannot run at all. However, without these exclusive functions, when encountering specific poisoning scenarios, the basic system alone cannot solve the problem. When we ordinary people learn first aid, we don’t have to worry about the definition of the two. If we encounter a problem, we should first ensure that the patient can breathe smoothly and avoid causing secondary injuries, and then consider whether it is poisoning and whether to call 120 to explain the situation and find the corresponding solution. Basically, there will be no major mistakes.
